The term great is thrown around so much these days in reference to players, coaches, teams, organizations that it is losing its meaning. Great means if you look it up endowed with extraordinary powers; uncommonly gifted; able to accomplish vast results; strong; powerful; mighty; noble; as, a great hero, scholar, genius, philosopher. So how is it we live in a society where so many people athletes, coaches, organizations are great but we hardly see tangible evidence. Of course you can look at numbers and compare generations, but let’s be real none of the games or teams are played or run the same as the past. Now it is how much money a player can make as a player and the same goes for the organization. In the past it was about winning games and championships that is how you earned greatness, not by having a good game or season. The term great is too loosely thrown out to anyone that has a nice stretch of games, to be a great player you need to have a body of work to validate that statement. The media is mostly to blame they are the ultimate bandwagon people one minute your great a future hall of famer, the next get the new guy in there he looked great in practice. People evaluate athletes, coaches, and organizations too much in the here and now instead of evaluating the body of work.
